SpyWare & Pop-ups
Microsoft Windows Defender
- Microsoft Windows Defender is the new name for the 'Microsoft AntiSpyware' program, which is based on the Giant AntiSpyware solution that Microsoft got when they purchased 'Giant Company Software' back in December 17th 2004. It stays running in the background, creating a real-time protection against SpyWare threats.
Ad-Aware
- A real paranoid person would never trust a single solution, so you can always run Ad-Aware once in a while to verify if 'Microsoft Windows Defender' is doing a good job.
Pop-up blocker Windows XP
- Since Windows XP Service Pack 2, there is a very effective pop-up blocker option added for Internet Explorer. By default it's settings are set at a level that might still allow a lot of pop-ups. We advice to change the settings to maximum and use the CTRL key to manually allow pop-ups. Disabling the sound and information bar checkbox options might help in keeping your sanity as well.
Advanced Tools
CompuSec
- CompuSec is an easy to use, encryption protection, that will help secure your valuable data. Especially for a notebook, which could get lost or stolen, it is important that your personal data remains safe. The protection can be enabled to work on pre-boot, meaning that even before the computer becomes usable, a correct password is required.
DropMyRights
- DropMyRights is a way to put Internet Explorer in a secure 'sandbox'. This means that even if IE is compromised with a trojan/virus, it can not do much damage, because it does not have admin rights anymore. This allows Windows Vista alike protection for Windows 2000/XP users.
WinBar
- WinBar is a very nice addition to show more information on your screen about your computer. It also comes with many additions, such as ability to sync your time & date to an online atomic clock, check for new e-mail, give information on your internet download and upload speed, your uptime, news tracker that is compatible with any RSS/XML based news feed, and many more.
Speedfan
- Since the developers behind MainBoardMonitor (MBM) decided to stop their development, we where forced to look for an alternative solution. Fortunately we stumbled upon Speedfan, which for us performs even better then MBM. It offers many advanced options to tweak its settings and appearance, so please read the instructions carefully.
Hijack This v1.99.1
- Easy tool for the more experienced user to detect unknown Trojan/Virus infection and remove Startup/BHO/etc items.
RealVNC v4.1.3
- Remote control tool that we use to help our clients. It is best to disable Java access on port 5800 and restrict remote access to static IPs (or even better tunnel is via SSH). If a router is in use, adjustments need to be made, to allow TCP port 5900 to port-forward to the correct computer. Multiple systems on the same LAN can be controlled, by using a different port for each computer and adjust the port-forward table accordingly.
No-IP Client v2.2.1
- Tool we use for our remote control clients, so that we can find them even if their IP changes.
We hope you enjoy these tools, and will add more as soon as we find them, and made sure they work as well as advertised.
